| "Fowled Up" | |
I was raised on Daly Corners, near Columbia, South Dakota. My dad, Arthur Daly, was an avid goose hunter. A lot of our fall meals centered around the "daily" hunt. In a small book of hunting memoirs, entitled Hobby of a Lifetime, Dad wrote in his first story-----"51 mornings in a row that started out the same way, early rising, early chores, early breakfast, and Sand Lake for an hour or so. I got my fall work done as my hobby of a lifetime took mostly the early hours."
One of my first paintings was of Canadian geese. My sister, also an artist, has carved, out of wood, a Canadian goose. It all brings back loving memories of our Dad. My painting hung in his nursing home room and he would tell people who had painted that scene. When my Dad passed away in 1992, the funeral procession went through Daly Corners and as we rounded the corner heading to Columbia thousands of geese led the way. It was a phenomenal sight as they were in the area earlier than normal. They led Dad to his resting place. When Doug Sombke asked me to be the Featured Artist for the South Dakota Farmers Union Foundation Fundraiser and that one of my paintings would be used as the main piece for the auction, I knew which one it had to be. As my Dad was an honest, hardworking farmer, his love for geese and his sense of humor-this recent painting of Canadian geese entitled "Fowled Up" was my choice. Medium: Acrylic |
